Biography
8 Jan. 1813–19 Sept. 1889. Teacher, engineer, newspaper editor, lawyer, bookkeeper. Born in Royalton, Windsor Co., Vermont. Son of Daniel V. Carrington and Isabella Bowman. Graduated from Dartmouth College, in Hanover, Grafton Co., New Hampshire, 1833. Taught school and studied law for about three years in Pennsylvania. Moved to Wisconsin Territory, ca. 1836. Married Rhoda Maria Woods, 6 Dec. 1838, in Iowa Co., Wisconsin Territory. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by William O. Clark, 13 July 1841, in Wiota, Iowa Co. Received elder’s license, 11 Oct. 1841. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, 1844. Admitted to Council of Fifty, 4 Mar. 1845. Ordained a high priest, 23 Mar. 1845. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, 1847. Elected assessor and collector for provisional state of Deseret, 12 Mar. 1849. Helped survey Great Salt Lake, ca. 1849–1850. Editor of Deseret News, 1854–1859, 1863–1867. Served as secretary to Brigham Young for more than twenty years. Served as church historian, Apr. 1871–9 May 1874. Served as assistant counselor to Brigham Young, Apr. 1873–Aug. 1877. Presided over British mission, 1868–1870; presided over European mission, 1871–1873, 1875–1877, 1880–1882. Member of Quorum of the Twelve, 1870–1885. Excommunicated, 6 Nov. 1885; rebaptized, 1 Nov. 1887. Died in Salt Lake City.
