Biography
1 Dec. 1787–after 27 Jan. 1848. Tinsmith. Born in Chatham, Middlesex Co., Connecticut. Son of Asael (Asahel) Mathews and Anner Harding. Married Elizabeth (Betsey) Burgess, ca. 15 Sept. 1811, in Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. Moved to Canandaigua, Ontario Co., New York, by 1820; to Eldorado Township, McDonough Co., Illinois, ca. 1830; and to Morgan Co., Illinois, by July 1835. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by 1840. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by 6 Apr. 1840. Ordained a priest, 20 Mar. 1841. Ordained an elder, by 18 Apr. 1842. Involved in Graham Coltrin v. Anson Mathews legal case, 1843. Ordained a high priest, 25 Jan. 1845, in Nauvoo. Migrated to Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), before 12 Dec. 1847.
