Biography
13 Dec. 1802–20 Apr. 1872. Farmer, carpenter, policeman, prison administrator. Born in St. Clair, Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. Son of John Carn (Garn) and Susanna Pringle. Married Margaret Moses, 2 Dec. 1824, in St. Clair. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1830. Moved to Jefferson, Richland Co., Ohio, by June 1830. Ordained an elder, 4 Sept. 1836, in Richland Co. Moved to Missouri, ca. 1837. Ordained a high priest, by 1838. Member of high council at Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, 1838. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by June 1840. Appointed as bishop of Nauvoo Six Ward, 20 Aug. 1842. Served as Nauvoo policeman. Elected as president of Mercantile and Mechanical Association of Nauvoo. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, arriving Sept. 1848. Bishop of Salt Lake City Ninth Ward, 1849–1851. Served mission to Germany, 1852–1854, where he was appointed first branch president of mission. First warden of Utah territorial prison, 1855–1859. Died in Salt Lake City.
