Biography
25 Mar. 1816–7 Aug. 1841. Farmer, printer, editor. Born at Norwich, Windsor Co., Vermont. Son of Joseph Smith Sr. and Lucy Mack. Moved to Palmyra, Ontario Co., New York, 1816–Jan. 1817. Moved to Manchester, Ontario Co., 1825. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by David Whitmer, ca. 9 June 1830, at Seneca Lake, Seneca Co., New York. Accompanied his father on mission to Asael Smith family in St. Lawrence Co., New York, Aug. 1830. Lived at The Kingdom, unincorporated settlement near Waterloo, Seneca Co., Nov. 1830. Migrated to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, with Lucy Mack Smith company of Fayette, Seneca Co., branch of Latter-day Saints, May 1831. Employed by Kirtland printing shop under Oliver Cowdery, fall 1833. Married Agnes Moulton Coolbrith, 30 July 1835, at Kirtland. Ordained a high priest and appointed president of Kirtland high priests quorum, 15 Jan. 1836. Served mission to Pennsylvania and New York, 1836. Continued working in Kirtland printing shop; involved with publication of Elders’ Journal. Moved to New Portage, Medina Co., Ohio, Dec. 1837. Served mission to Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, spring 1838. Left Ohio for Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, May 1838. Served mission to Kentucky and Tennessee, 1838. Expelled from Far West, Feb. 1839; moved to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois. Lived at Macomb, McDonough Co., Illinois, and then moved to Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, 1839. President of high priests in Commerce, 1839. Editor and publisher of Times and Seasons, with Ebenezer Robinson, 1839–1841, at Nauvoo. Elected member of Nauvoo City Council, 1 Feb. 1841. Appointed a regent of University of Nauvoo, 3 Feb. 1841. Elected brigadier general in Nauvoo Legion, 5 Feb. 1841. Died at Nauvoo.
