Biography
22 May 1796–20 Oct. 1865. Farmer. Born at Thornton, Grafton Co., New Hampshire. Son of John McArthur and Margaret Aiken. Moved to Holland, Erie Co., New York, ca. 1816. Married Susan McKeen, 1 Jan. 1818, in Holland. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Daniel Hicks, 22 Mar. 1835, in Holland. Ordained a deacon by Andrew G. Squires, 6 Apr. 1835. Presided over branch in Holland, 1835. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, Sept. 1836. Ordained a seventy by Joseph Young and became member of Second Quorum of Seventy, Dec. 1836. Moved to Missouri, 1838. Moved to near Payson, Adams Co., Illinois, spring 1839. Served mission in New York, Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts, 1839–1840. Ordained a high priest, 27 Oct. 1840. Joined Nauvoo Masonic Lodge, 17 Mar. 1842. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, Apr. 1842. Filed complaint against Albert Clements and Albert and Henry Tanner, accusing them of slandering his wife and children, 19 Dec. 1842. Appointed to serve mission to campaign for JS as candidate for U.S. president, 15 Apr. 1844. Moved to Garden Grove, Decatur Co., Iowa Territory, 1846. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley; settled in Pleasant Grove, Utah Co., Utah Territory, by 1852. Counselor to bishop of Pleasant Grove Ward, 1852. Elected to Utah territorial legislature, Aug. 1854. Helped settle Mount Pleasant, Sanpete Co., Utah Territory, 1859. Died at Mount Pleasant.
