Stiles, George Philander
Biography
18 July 1816–Sept. 1885. Attorney, judge, politician. Born in Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York. Son of John Stiles and Persis Cole. Moved to Le Ray, Jefferson Co., by 1820. Moved to Pamela, Jefferson Co., by 1830. Married first Julian Mackemer, 7 Nov. 1841, in Hancock Co., Illinois. Served as city attorney in Nauvoo, Hancock Co. Married second Sophia Janett Schofield, 4 Feb. 1843, in Hancock Co. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Brigham Young, 26 Aug. 1844. Ordained a seventy, by 7 Jan. 1846. Moved to Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, by 1850, eventually settling in what became Council Bluffs. Married third Isabell, 1846. Elected Council Bluffs city attorney, 13 Apr. 1853. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley. Appointed associate justice of Utah Territory, Aug. 1854. Excommunicated, Dec. 1856. Moved to Washington DC, spring 1857. Moved to Cardington, Morrow Co., Ohio, by 1860. Served in Civil War. Elected mayor of Cardington, 1867. Returned to Washington DC, by 1880, where he worked as clerk in U.S. Treasury. Died in Belton, Bell Co., Texas.
