Biography
23 Dec. 1797–16 Feb. 1874. Farmer, merchant, judge. Born in Galloway, Gloucester Co., New Jersey. Son of Isaac Higbee and Sophia Somers. Moved to Clermont Co., Ohio, ca. 1802. Married Keziah String, 11 Feb. 1819, in Clermont Co. Moved to Cincinnati, by 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, May 1832. Ordained an elder by Lyman Wight and Calvin Wilson, 23 June 1832. Moved to Independence, Jackson Co., Missouri, spring 1833. Ordained a high priest, 22 Mar. 1835, in Clay Co., Missouri. Served mission in Illinois and Ohio, 1835–1838. Moved to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, Feb. 1839. Moved to Hancock Co., Illinois, by 1840. Appointed bishop by JS, 29 Feb. 1841, in Nauvoo, Hancock Co. Elected justice of the peace, Aug. 1843, in Nauvoo. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley; arrived 24 Sept. 1848. Appointed to preside over Saints in Utah Valley (later Provo, Utah Co., Utah), 28 May 1849. Served as first stake president in Provo, 1851–1852. Appointed probate judge in Utah Co., Dec. 1852. Appointed to serve mission to Europe, 1856. Died in Provo.
