Biography

25 Oct. 1816–in/after 1862. Constable, carpenter, justice of the peace. Born in Rutland Co., Vermont. Son of Samuel Miles and Sarah Simonds. Moved to Freedom, Cattaraugus Co., New York, ca. 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Orson Pratt, 7 Apr. 1834, at Freedom. Moved to Caldwell Co., Missouri, 1837; to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, ca. Dec. 1838; and to Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, after 11 May 1839. Accompanied JS to Monmouth, Warren Co., Illinois, for trial, June 1841. Resided in Nauvoo Third Ward, ca. 1842. Member of Nauvoo Legion. Disfellowshipped, 27 May 1842, in Nauvoo. Served as Hancock Co. constable; arrested JS and others for destruction of Nauvoo Expositor press, 17 June 1844, and testified at subsequent trial. Married first Delilah, before 1845. Moved with Lyman Wight’s company to Republic of Texas, spring 1845. Married second Patience F. Curtis, spring 1845. Served mission to members of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and James J. Strang’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Moved to San Antonio, by 1850. Moved to DeWitt Co., Texas, by July 1852. Served as justice of the peace, 1857–1862.
