16 Jan. 1811–30 Apr. 1881. Shoemaker, farmer. Born at Rowley, Essex Co., Massachusetts. Son of Nathaniel Holmes and Sarah Harriman. Lived at Napoli, Cattaraugus Co., New York, 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by 1834. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1834. Assigned proselytizing mission to Upper Canada with Lyman E. Johnson, 20 Feb. 1834. Participated in Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri, 1834. Served mission to Tennessee and Illinois, 1835. Ordained a seventy, 3 Jan. 1837. Served mission to Upper Canada and eastern U.S., 1837. Member of Wilford Woodruff company traveling from Fox Islands, Maine, to Kirtland, 6 Oct. 1838. Moved from Kirtland to Illinois, 1839. Served mission to England, 1844. Appointed president of church conference, 15 Sept. 1845, held at Manchester, Lancashire, England. Returned to U.S. and settled in Georgetown, Essex Co., Massachusetts. Married Aphia S. Woodman, 25 Jan. 1846, in Wilton, Franklin Co., Maine. Excommunicated, 1847. Lived near Boston, 1847, when affiliated with James J. Strang’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Moved to Wilton, by June 1850. Died at Wilton.
