Biography
2 Sept. 1806–9 Dec. 1883. Attorney, judge, railroad executive. Born in Burton, Geauga Co., Ohio. Son of Peter Hitchcock and Nabby Cook. Moved to New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut. Graduated from Yale University, 1826. Taught at Burton Academy, ca. 1826–1829, in Burton. Admitted to Ohio bar, ca. 1831. Moved to Painesville, Geauga Co., ca. 1831. Married Sarah Marshall, 18 Sept. 1834, in Colebrook, Litchfield Co., Connecticut. Served as prosecuting attorney in Geauga Co., 1835–1839. Partner in law firm of Hitchcock & Wilder, 1837–1846. Involved in legal proceedings that included JS. President of First National Bank, 1838–1841, in Painesville. Served as presiding judge of court of common pleas for district that included Lake Co., Ohio, 1841. Moved to Cleveland and headed firm of Hitchcock, Wilson & Wade, 1846. Returned to Painesville, 1851. Served as judge of court of common pleas for district that included Geauga and Lake counties, 1852–1855. Served as vice president and legal advisor of Cleveland and Mahoning Railroad, 1855. Elected mayor of Painesville, 1874. Died in Clifton Springs, Ontario Co., New York.
