Hunter, Edward
Biography
22 June 1793–16 Oct. 1883. Farmer, currier, surveyor, merchant. Born at Newtown Township, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania. Son of Edward Hunter and Hannah Maris. Volunteer cavalryman in Delaware Co. militia, 1822–1829. Served as Delaware Co. commissioner. Moved to West Nantmeal Township (later Wallace Township), Chester Co., Pennsylvania, 1827. Married Ann Standley, 30 Sept. 1830, at Chester Co. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Orson Hyde, 8 Oct. 1840, at West Nantmeal Township. Appointed herald and armor bearer in Nauvoo Legion, Sept. 1841. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, summer 1842. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge. Housed JS secretly, Sept. 1842. Member of Nauvoo City Council. Regent of University of Nauvoo, 1844–1846. Following murder of JS in Carthage, Hancock Co., 1844, escorted bodies of JS and Hyrum Smith into Nauvoo and helped bury them privately. Ordained a high priest by Brigham Young, before Nov. 1844, at Nauvoo. Served as bishop of Nauvoo Fifth Ward, 1844–1846. Moved to Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), 1846. Migrated to Salt Lake City, 1847. Served as presiding bishop of church, 1851–1883. Died at Salt Lake City.
