Biography
7 Apr. 1797–16 July 1881. Farmer, painter, glazier. Born at Hopkinton, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. Son of John Young and Abigail (Nabby) Howe. Moved to Auburn, Cayuga Co., New York, before 1830. Joined Methodist church, before Apr. 1832. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Daniel Bowen, 6 Apr. 1832, at Columbia, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania. Ordained an elder by Ezra Landon, Apr. 1832. Served mission to New York, spring 1832. Served mission to Upper Canada, summer 1832. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, fall 1832. Served mission to Upper Canada, winter 1832–1833. Married Jane Adeline Bicknell, 18 Feb. 1834, at Geneseo, Livingston Co., New York. Participated in Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri, 1834. Ordained a seventy, 28 Feb. 1835, in Kirtland. Appointed a president of First Quorum of the Seventy, 1 Mar. 1835. Served missions to eastern states, 1835, 1836. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Moved from Kirtland to Missouri, July–Oct. 1838, and witnessed massacre at Hawn’s Mill, Caldwell Co., Missouri. During exodus from Missouri, located temporarily at Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, 1840. Member of Nauvoo Legion, 1842. Appointed “first president over all the quorums of the seventies” at conference in Nauvoo, Oct. 1844. Admitted to Council of Fifty, 1 Mar. 1845. Resided at Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), and at Carterville, Iowa, 1846–1850. Migrated to Utah Territory, Sept. 1850. Served in Utah territorial legislature. Served mission to British Isles, 1870. Died at Salt Lake City.
