Biography
13 Mar. 1795–3 Mar. 1871. Farmer, stockman. Born at Dunstable, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. Son of Abel Butterfield and Mercy Farnsworth. Married first Polly Moulton, 30 Oct. 1819. Moved to Buxton, York Co., Maine, 1820. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by John F. Boynton, 1 Oct. 1833, in Maine. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, ca. 1834. Served missions to Maine and Vermont, 1834, 1836. Received elder’s license, 4 Apr. 1836; ordained a seventy, 1836. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Appointed a president of the Seventy, 6 Apr. 1837. Assisted in migration of Kirtland Camp to Missouri, 1838. Appointed member of committee on removal from Missouri under Brigham Young, 26 Jan. 1839. Following expulsion of Latter-day Saints from Missouri, settled at Bear Creek, Adams Co., Illinois, 1839. Excommunicated, 7 Oct. 1844; rebaptized into church, by Jan. 1846. Married second Margaret Lawrence, by Jan. 1846. Married third Clarinda, by 1853, possibly in California. Moved to California, before 1854. Resided at Gilroy, Santa Clara Co., California, by June 1860. Baptized into Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by Glaud Rodger, 1 May 1865, at Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., California. By June 1870, moved to Watsonville, where he served as branch president in Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Died at Watsonville.
