Summary

Initially established as district of Massachusetts, 1691. Admitted as state, 1820. Population in 1830 about 400,000. Population in 1840 about 500,000. Capital city and seat of government, Augusta. First visited by Latter-day Saint missionaries, Sept. 1832. Branches of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located in Farmington and Saco, by 1832. Wilford Woodruff and others arrived in Fox Islands, by Aug. 1837, and established branch. Many converts emigrated with Woodruff to Illinois, 1838. By 1847, nearly 500 converts left Maine to gather with Saints in Missouri and Illinois.
