Massachusetts
Summary
One of original thirteen colonies that formed U.S. Capital city, Boston. Colonized by English religious dissenters, 1620s. Population in 1830 about 610,000. Population in 1840 about 738,000. Joseph Smith Sr. born in Massachusetts. Samuel Smith and Orson Hyde served missions to Massachusetts, June 1832, and organized two small branches of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. JS visited state several times. Boston and Salem areas were sites of many church activities. Some members of Quorum of the Twelve conducted conference in Massachusetts, Sept. 1841. JS dictated revelation in state, 6 Aug. 1836. Brigham Young arrived in state, by Aug. 1836, and baptized many people, including extended family members. By 1843, Massachusetts had at least fourteen branches of church.
