Whitney, Elizabeth Ann Smith
Biography
26 Dec. 1800–15 Feb. 1882. Born at Derby, New Haven Co., Connecticut. Daughter of Gibson Smith and Polly Bradley. Moved to Ohio, 1819. Married Newel K. Whitney, 20 Oct. 1822, at Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio. Shortly after, joined reformed Baptist (later Disciples of Christ or Campbellite) movement. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by missionaries to unorganized Indian Territory, Nov. 1830. Left Kirtland for Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, fall 1838, but at St. Louis learned that Latter-day Saints were being driven from Missouri. Located at Carrollton, Greene Co., Illinois, winter 1838–1839. Moved to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, winter 1839–1840, and then to Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, spring 1840. Appointed counselor in presidency of Female Relief Society of Nauvoo, 17 Mar. 1842. Moved to Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), Feb. 1846. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, arriving 24 Sept. 1848. Husband died, 1850. Second counselor to Eliza R. Snow in Relief Society presidency, 1880–1882. Died at Salt Lake City.
